Statement of intent to employ a minor and request for a work permit – certificate of age

FAQ

  • What is a work permit?

A work permit is a legal document required by the state of California that allows a person under 18 years of age to hold a job. You may get a work permit from Bayfront.

  • Where can I get one?

Steps to obtain a work permit:

    1. Download a work permit application (form B1-1 intent to employ form) from one of the links above.

    2. Fill out the personal information at the top of the application, including your social security number.

    3. Make sure it the form has BOTH employer and PARENT signatures.

    4. Return the completed work permit application to Mr . Santos where the work permit will be reviewed with attendance and academic requirements. Grades & attendance from the previous and current quarter will be used to determine eligibility. Work Permits may take up to a week to process.

    5. Mr. Santos will send you the Official Work Permit for you to sign and date.

    6. You can then give your employer the permit and begin working!

  • What do I need in order to get a work permit?

Having a job is a big time commitment and we want to be sure it does not get in the way of your success at school. So, there are a couple of things we look at first:

    1. Is the student passing all their classes? (Grade 'C' or above)

    2. Is the student in good attendance? (No more than 3 absences in a quarter)

If you do not meet these requirements but are still interested in getting a job, please email Mr. Santos so we can support you in that goal and create a plan to make it happen!

  • When does a work permit expire?

Each work permit usually expires about a year from the date it was issued. So, if you have been working at the same job for almost a year and plan to continue working there, you should email Mr. Santos to renew your permit.

A work permit is no longer valid when a minor quits or leaves a job. A new work permit application must be filled out for each new job. So, if you received a work permit for one job and left to a new place of employment, you must get a new work permit from Mr. Santos- even if the old one has not expired yet.
